His artistry accorded him an unprecedented level of respect, so much that his craftsmanship was sought out by southern aristocrats, including then--North Carolina governor David S. Reid. Today, more than a century and a half later, people are more aware of the work of early African-American craftsmen, and Day has acquired a reputation as one of the most important among them. "The more we find out about Day and his struggles as a free Black, the more people appreciate his work," says Patricia Marshall, curator of furnishings and decorative arts at the North Carolina Museum of History. The current interest in this extraordinary artist far surpasses the availability of original pieces that occasionally come on the market.
