In the 1700s and 1800s, the lords, barons, and ladies of that day built fine manor houses surrounded by expansive lands. The owners of these lands oversaw an entire economic system based on agriculture and light manufacturing. The management of these lands was critical to the support of the common man as well as the support of the crown. To escape the rigors of their daily responsibilities, the Lords of the Manor would build getaways in the outlying areas where life was simpler than that of the manor house. Typically these homes were along the borders of their estates or along the borders of other countries. Their days were filled with outdoor activities, including hunting, riding, picnicking, etc The homes and their furnishings, although simpler, were still grand relative to the way the common folk of that day lived. The materials in many cases were cultivated from the local forests and lands where the homes and their furnishings were constructed. Local artisans built the country homes and their furnishings, which were somewhat cruder and simpler than the fine detailing of the manor house. The results were furnishings of a relaxed lifestyle that gave the lord and his friends respite from the formal and rigorous pressure of their daily life. This formal lifestyle and the styling that contributed to it are the inspiration for the Cardigan Bay Collection. This collection is on target to give Hekman customers an escape from todays rigorous lifestyle. Villa Firenze is a collection of classic European styles—Italian, French, English—and all eclectic in style, substrate, and finish. From rich Italian legs, to regency styling, every piece is aged and well worn with burnished highlights and hand rubbed with a clear wax finish. Then every piece is outlined with antique ebony stripping to highlight the form. "Cherry Classic" has relatively simple design elements, without elaborate carvings, and intricate veneer patterns. Villageois has selected this approach, to give the collection a more casual feel, rather than a formal approach, which is more compatible with the majority of American's lifestyle. They have selected to build this collection using solid "Northern Black Cherry," which is considered one of the finest cabinet woods that have been used for centuries in some of the finest furniture made in American and Europe. The finishe selected for the "Cherry Classic" collection is a medium brown finish, with subtle distressing and a low sheen catalyzed lacquer top coat. The result is a more relaxed, liveable feel that will be timeless in its appeal. The catalyzed lacquer top coat provides added protection from every day use. The contruction technique used is a frame and panel construction. Villageois used a mortise and tenon construction throughout the case, which is the strongest method of contruction.
