About Couristan For over 75 years Couristan, Inc. has been a powerful name in the area rug and broadloom industry. Owned by the Couri family for two generations and operated today by brothers George G. Couri, Chairman and Ron J. Couri, CEO and President, the company prides itself on having the most exquisite handmade and power-loomed floor coverings available from anywhere around the world. Founded in 1926 by brothers Basil J. Couri and George J. Couri, and appropriately named "Couri Brothers," the company began its humble beginnings by importing fine handmade area rugs from Persia. According to Ron Couri, Couristan's CEO and President, importing area rugs from Persia was a difficult task. "I remember listening to my father and uncle's travel stories. First they took a ship to England, then another to the continent. Once in Europe they took the Orient Express and then drove through the desert to Persia. They finally arrived 32 days later. It was quite an adventure." The first area rugs imported by the company were a few shipments of Sparta Rugs from Smyrna. Hellenic Rug Imports Super Heavy Flokati Natural Shag Rug
Flokati rugs have been a Greek tradition for centuries.These rugs originally served the shephards as clothing, beds for tents, kept them warm during the long winter months. Flokati rugs are first hand-woven then sewn, ready for the birth process. Born under the waterfalls of the famous Pindos Mountains, every rug is placed in the friction baths connected to the waterfalls.The rugs are subjected to tremendous water pressure for 40 hours, and the backing swells while the pile unravels and fluffs out. Each is then hung to dry in the Greek sun and carefully inspected to assure the finest quality, comfort and elegance. Caring for your Flokati Rug General- We recommend combing your flokati rug with a wide-toothed plastic hairbrush or a simple wood or plastic garden rake to fluff it. A good shaking will also help to substantially fluff up your new rug. Washing- Your flokati rug should be given a good shaking outdoors periodically to remove dust. Small rugs can be put in the washing machine on the gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent, like Woolite, and air dried out of direct sunlight to prevent distorting the color. Larger rugs, 30" x 54" and above, must be cleaned in a commercial washer (35 lbs). They can be found in many laundromats. Add mild detergent as the water is filling, then add flokati only after detergent is mixed well with the water. Lay flat to dry. If the rug looks disheveled, comb it. DO NOT: blevery, wash in hot water, place in dryer, or dry clean. Vacuuming- Although vacuuming is NOT recommended, use the attachment suction hose if necessary. DO NOT: run the vacuum over rug with the rotating brush; the long hairs of the rug will get caught. Storage- Use a moth repellent as flokati rugs are one hundred procent wool.
