The Monk Lamp, originally fashioned with a microphone base and plumbing pipe, was a homemade reading lamp Espinet had made for himself. When a photo shoot by Todd Eberle of Espinet?s studio landed the lamp in both a House & Garden article and a Hunter Douglas ad campaign, Robert Abbey invited him to design a line to manufacture. For his work in fashion, Espinet received two Gene Moore Awards: for a Polo Sport window, and Comme des Garcons window created by Simon Doonan for Barneys. Rico Espinet features lamps and fixtures for Robert Abbey Lighting, Inc. that couples perspicuous line and warm, often atmospheric light into collections that affirm their environment.
